TYPES OF POKER GAMES GUIDE
What follows is a games guide on all the types of poker you are likely
to see, whether you be playing online, at a home game or even at the World
Series of Poker! For tips and advice on how best to play all types of
poker games, see our Poker Gambling and Gaming Strategy Guide.
Texas Hold 'em Guide:
In Texas Hold 'em every player is dealt two cards face down (‘hole’cards).
When all the bets have been made, three cards from the deck are placed
face up so that everyone seated at the table can see them (‘the
Flop’). Another round of betting follows. Once all the bets are
placed, a fourth card is turned over (‘the Turn’). Another
round of betting occurs before the fifth and final card is then placed
face up on the table (‘the River’). The aim is to make the
best five card poker hand, out of your two hole cards and the five community
cards. Whoever has the best poker hand wins the pot!
The slight catch is that this game is more about betting! During each
betting round, everyone has the opportunity to raise the bet, call the
bet or fold (muck the cards without putting more chips down). If everyone
at the table folds to a big bet, the person who initially raised can win
the pot without even showing his/her poker hand! Only if two or more people
call the raises will the game reach a showdown where they have to show
their hands and see who has the best five card poker hand.
If you are new to poker, our advice is to start with Texas Hold’em
as it is currently the most popular of all the types of poker game in
the world. It can regularly be viewed on television and is played at the
World Series of Poker and at the World Poker Tour. We advise that you
watch the stars playing to pick up the odd tip on how to outwit your opponents
in all the poker games. These tips can be applied to all types of poker
games. These programmes are crammed with information which will increase
your skill level in minutes, whichever of the types of poker games you
choose.

7 Card Stud Guide:
Each poker player gets dealt two down cards and one card facing up. Players
then bet on the potential strength of their poker hands so far (and as
in Texas Hold’em, those not wishing to pursue the hand further can
fold and discard their cards). After the round of betting, another card
is dealt face up in front of the remaining players. This process happens
two more times, with the result that each remaining player has two down
cards and four facing up. A final card is placed in front of each player
facing downwards. As in Texas Hold’em, if players have made bets
all the way, a showdown determines who has made the best five card poker
hand and who therefore wins the pot.

Omaha Guide:
Omaha is similar in type to Texas Hold 'em. Instead of being dealt two
hole cards, each player is dealt four. The five community cards appear
in the same way. Each player must then use two out of their four hole
cards, and three community cards to make their best possible poker hand.
The player with the best five card poker hand wins the pot.

5 Card Draw Guide:
Each player at the table gets five cards face down. After a betting round,
each player can throw away between naught and five cards in order to draw
that many fresh cards from the deck. The player with the best poker hand
wins after another round of betting.
