A New Poker Book From Phil Gordon – His “Little Blue Book”
Phil Gordon can certainly be considered a poker playing legend, but some would argue his teaching abilities exceed his playing abilities – and not in a bad way! Phil Gordon is generally considered to be one of the foremost and most respected poker instructors on the planet. He has produced a wide range of instructional material to accelerate the development of any budding poker enthusiast and help them accumulate an ever-growing custom poker chip stack.
Gordon’s first instructional poker book entitled, ‘Poker-The Real Deal’ was a benchmark of quality and lead the way for his other titles including his ‘Little Green Book’. His newest title, ’Little Blue Book’ provides a nice link to his previous titles and is generally retailing for $21 USD and is widely available. In this book, Gordon attempts to present his own line of thinking in many different scenarios. This book is not a traditional presentation of cold probabilities, but is an anecdotal presentation of his own poker style and history.
This book is not intended to be a guide to theoretically perfect poker play. Whilst Gordon appreciates and backs his thinking with acceptance of mathematical probability, he blends this into his own style and method. The probabilities are only half of the game. Betting is the other half and is much more subjective in nature. The real benefit of this book is that you are getting access to the inner workings of Gordon’s mindset at the table.
The general presentation of this book is an easy-to-read approach to learning poker. Most of the complex mathematical theory that could be presented in a poker book is left out, but accounted for in the approach taken. For most poker players, a simple approach is better at the poker table. If one can walk to the table with a few simple rules of thumb regarding probabilities, most of their focus can be dedicated to the betting rounds of the game.
The ‘Little Blue Book’ is well cross-referenced with his previous edition ‘Little Green Book’ and if used together form a very powerful guide to increasing your customized poker chip stack. So if you’re stuck for something to buy your poker-obsessed friends for Christmas this year, look no further than this great little book.
