Silently Bluffing With Your Poker Chips at the Poker Table!

09 February 2008
Sometimes it is good to maintain the fiction that you never bluff as a poker player. Say you are sitting at a ten seater poker table in a tournament and you are playing very few hands, as the hands and hours progress the other players think it less and less likely that you will dare attempt a bluff. Sure you will get abuse hurled at you for being a boring player or for being a ‘rock’ (a term used to describe a tight but cautious poker player) but towards the end of the game (because let’s face it, others will get knocked out before you if you play tightly) you will be able to use this to your advantage.

The other day, I had Q-10 and the flop showed an ace, a ten and a king. I decided I would put a bet out even though I had only called the pre-flop raise and immediately someone with a king (the only other player in the hand) folded, automatically assuming I had the ace! He made a great fuss about showing everyone he had the king and instantly made this play. I so wanted to show everyone I had worse cards but before I turned them over and gloated, I decided to muck the cards silently to maintain the fiction that I never bluffed and always bet when I had the cards. It is hard but deep down I knew that I would be rewarded for making that sacrifice in the long run!
