Play Your Poker Chips Wisely And Calculate Your Hand Odds

07 June 2010
Poker is not a game of luck! As World Poker Tour Poker Star, TJ Cloutier, once said:
‘You gotta get your chips in with the best [hand] and then hope’.
Sure, there is some element of luck (just like there is in cricket or football) but there is a way of assessing whether you actually hold the ‘best’ poker hand at any one time. We do this by calculating hand odds. There are vastly complicated of doing these sorts of calculations, but for most of us (whilst sitting at the poker table with our poker chips), we just want a quickfire solution. Well here is one:
When the flop comes out, look at your poker hand and work out how many outs you have. An out is a card which will help you achieve the poker hand which you think (based on all the information currently available) will win (will be the nuts!). So say you are aiming for a straight 2-3-4-5-6 and you have everything but the 4, your only out is a 4. Say you have four hearts then any heart is an out card (much higher chance of getting these as there are 9 remaining hearts in the deck i.e. 9 outs).
Then, whilst sitting at the poker table with your poker chips, multiply the number of outs by 4 to get a rough and ready percentage chance of making your poker hand. 9*4 = 36% so there is a more than one in three chance of hitting the flush (as opposed to 4*4 = 16 for the inside straight draw).
Once the turn card comes out, if you hit the card then cleverly play your poker chips in order to suck as many poker chips out of each poker player at the poker table. If you don’t hit your card, multiply the remaining outs by 2 this time.
Good luck and may the poker gods be with you!
